Visit the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness for an incredible collection of artwork from the islands and further afield, including regular exhibitions and events.

The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness was established in 1979 and includes a permanent collection of works by major 20th Century artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis, as well as contemporary art by Sean Scully, Eva Rothschild and Olafur Eliasson. The collection also includes local artists like Sylvia Wishart and Stanley Cursiter.

A Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland, key works are regularly loaned to prominent exhibitions around the world. The Centre also curates a year round programme of changing exhibitions and events for the education and enjoyment of the general public.

On display until the 10th of November are two exhibitions; ‘Voice and Vision; the Poetry and Art of W.S. Graham’ marks the centenary of the artist’s birth and includes illuminated manuscripts, decorative letters, watercolours and oils.

The Centre also has ‘Barbara Rae: The Northwest Passage’, a body of work from the internationally-renowned artist, focusing on the Arctic and following in the footsteps of her namesake, Orcadian explorer Dr John Rae.

The Pier Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday between 10.30am and 5pm and admission is free.
