Take a trip back in time and see some of Orkney's wartime heritage with a guided walk at the former Royal Navy base in Lyness.

Orkney's Scapa Flow was the home of the Royal Navy during two World Wars, with thousands of servicemen and women stationed around the islands throughout both conflicts.

Lyness in Hoy was the beating heart of the Navy's operation, with barracks, supply stores, torpedo netting facilities, recreation halls and much more all based in around the port. Nowadays it's home to the Scapa Flow Visitor Centre & Museum, which is currently closed for refurbishment. But you can still can a sense of the site with a guided walking tour around the former base.

You can see the remains of the huge camp on your tour and get a real idea of the impact the wars had on Orkney's smaller island communities. A visit to the Royal Naval Cemetery nearby is also included.

Tours take place every Tuesday and Thursday until the 30th of October and last for around two hours. Meet at the Lyness Ferry Waiting Room. Booking is advised - tickets cost £5 and you can reserve your place by phoning 01856 791300 or by emailing museum@orkney.gov.uk
